Air Force Academy to host 2018 Warrior Games

Competition spotlights disabled veterans

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Department of Defense has announced that the US Air Force will host the 2018 Warrior games at the Air Force Academy (AFA) in Colorado Springs.

The Department of Defense made the announcement at the end of the 2017 games, which were held in Chicago by the US Navy.

The Warrior Games is a multi-sport competition for injured and ill veterans. Contestants are comprised of service members from all five branches of the military who suffer from Traumatic Brain Injuries, post-traumatic stress and spinal cord injuries among other disabilities.

The Warrior Games also host teams and contestants from British and Australian military branches.

The games are comprised of eight sports: archery, cycling, shooting, sitting volleyball, swimming, track, field and wheelchair basketball. Wheelchair rugby is occasionally added as an exhibition sport.

The games also have opening and closing ceremonies, which are usually hosted by celebrities and local government officials, as well as high-ranking military members.
