COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Police identified the man armed with a BB gun that caused a brief panic at a north-side Walmart store on Monday night as Jody Romero, 19.
Officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department tell us that the incident started much earlier in the evening at the COSTCO store at University Village. Witnesses there said Romero was holding a screwdriver and making incoherent threats to no one in particular.
When police arrived to question him, he fled.
Romera turned up later at the Walmart Supercenter near the Chapel Hills Mall, this time wielding a rifle.
He again frightened people, showing the weapon while talking out loud to himself.
This time, he left in the direction of the mall.
Police caught up with Romero at the AMC theaters, where he was still holding the rifle, which turned out to be a BB gun. One sergeant on scene told NewsChannel 13 that the man dropped the weapon while dangerously close to being shot by police.
Romero was detained about 9:30 pm, and will be held over for a mental evaluation. No one was hurt during the incident.
Employees at the Walmart store were held inside during the ordeal and were not allowed to leave the store until the situation was resolved.
