Former Springs Resident Killed in...

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. - A man originally from Colorado Springs, Colorado, was killed in Seminole County, Florida, after a hit-and run-Friday night.

Cody Dunavin, 22, was riding a friend's motorcycle in the Orlando area when he lost control and struck a curb,  then was run over by a passing driver, who fled the scene.

Dunavin graduated from Rampart High School in Colorado Springs and has a brother in town but most of his family lives in Salida.

"He was our little sunshine boy and now (he's) gone," Gayle Dunavin, his grandmother, said as the family gathered Sunday.

Cody Dunavin's mother, Kelly Dunavin, made an emotional plea to the hit-and-run driver.

"Just come forward," she said.  "We don't really blame you, but the fact that you ran over my son and just left. He was a human being.  He was my baby."

Adrian Dunavin said his brother moved to Florida several years ago, was working for the Department of Homeland Security and had planned to return to Colorado Springs in a few months to find a similar job.

"I have good memories of him," Adrian Dunavin said.  "When we were little, he used to lick my head like we were cats.  He thought he was cleaning me.  But the best memories were when he'd come back to visit us."

The Dunavins said Cody Dunavin was wearing a helmet at the time of the tragedy.

"We don't think he'd been drinking," Gayle Dunavin said.

The Dunavins have started a GoFundMe page with a goal of raising $20,000 for expenses to travel to Florida and bring their loved one's body back to Salida for burial.

As of Sunday night, more than $11,000 had been raised.
