EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. - The El Paso County Sheriff's Office announced Monday that it is investigating the disappearance and death of a child over the weekend as an accidental drowning.
Sherif's Office officials said despite medical treatment, Nain Dominguez, 2, died at a hospital.
It's unclear exactly what happened to him in the 12 hours he was missing.
According to one report, a neighbor said Nain's shoes were found in Fountain Creek, which flows through the Stratmoor Valley Trailhead, south of Colorado Springs, where Nain disappeared late Saturday evening.
That report, along with the cancellation of an Amber Alert issued Saturday night and no one being arrested, suggested the possibility that Nain's death was accidental.
However, the case remains under investigation, and the Sheriff's Office said it cannot release more details until the investigation ends.
Earlier reports from the Sheriff's Office that indicated Nain may have been abducted, and that a white van was being sought as a suspicious vehicle in the case, turned out to be false.
The Sheriff's Office said because a child was missing, it acted quickly on every possible lead to improve the chances of finding Nain, and canceled the Amber Alert once the abduction possibility had been ruled out.
Some neighbors went to the park Monday, saying they were sorry about Nain's death but not worried about safety there.
Other neighbors said the creek is too easy for children to reach from the park and a fence should be installed to limit access.
Neighbors also said the creek in that area is full of sandbars, fallen trees, boulders and other hazards than can make finding a lost child difficult.
Late Monday afternoon, a memorial containing stuffed animals, toys, candles and flowers began to grow at the park.
A GoFundMe page has been established to help Nain's family with funeral expenses.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office has found a missing toddler.
2-year-old Nain Dominguez was located, suffering from life-threatening injuries, just after 7 a.m. Sunday.
Deputies responded to the Stratmoor Valley area around 5:40 p.m. Saturday evening, after an older sibling reported Nain missing.
Nain was last seen in the Stratmoor Valley Trailhead, just south of Colorado Springs, where he was with his family.
He reportedly was playing with the older sibling there.
