COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Relatives of George Maldonado, the Colorado Springs auto repair shop owner killed during a robbery, spoke with KRDO NewsChannel 13 on Friday.
Maldonado, 49 died Thursday during the holdup at his shop near the intersection of Chelton Road and Platte Avenue.
An unidentified second man also was hurt and is still being treated at a local hospital.
Two suspects escaped and remain at large.
Issacc Ozeta, a nephew of Maldonado, came from Brighton to join many family members and friends at his uncle's home near the intersection of Marksheffel Road and Constitution Avenue.
"We're all handling it a little differently," Ozeta said. "We're trying to handle it as best as we can. We're going through a very hard time right now, but we're trying to keep it together."
Maldonado leaves behind his wife, Nancy, and four children.
"Funeral arrangements have not been made but we're talking about them," said Apolonia Paula Archuleta, the family's pastor. "Nancy wants to thank everyone for what they're doing. Words can't express what her heart is feeling."
Ozeta says he'll someday be able to forgive the men who killed his uncle.
"I am a man of faith but I was honestly thinking about this earlier," he said. "I went through something recently and forgave the person who put me through it. I can't forgive them now, but eventually I will. I just wonder why they had to kill him. There was no reason to do that."
Neighbors are stepping forward to help the family with funeral expenses. Proceeds from a yard sale Saturday will be given to the family.
The yard sale will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2404 Obsidian Forest View.
"At first, I thought we'd have to cancel it," said neighbor Beckie Culp. "I found out my HOA doesn't allow yard sales. But within 30 minutes, they gave me permission to do it. So I'm excited about it. I can't imagine what the family is going through."
