Teenager rescued after falling in Jefferson County mine shaft

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. - A teenager has been rescued and is safe after falling into an old mine shaft Thursday morning in Golden.

The teen fell into the shaft around 10:30 a.m. and multiple emergency crews were sent to the scene. Crews set up ropes and rappelled into the shaft to retrieve the teenager.

West Metro Fire said loose rock and debris made the rescue complicated, but the teenager was brought out of the shaft around 2 p.m.

The teen, who hasn't been identified, was conscious and talking with rescuers at the scene, but the extent of his injuries wasn't made available.
