Crashes, avalanche danger close mountain highways

SILVERTHORNE, Colo. - Hazardous travel conditions created a traffic nightmare in the mountains west of Denver Wednesday.

Eastbound I-70 was closed at Silverthorne and at Loveland Pass because of crashes.

US 6 was closed over Loveland Pass because of high avalanche danger.

The combination of holiday week traffic, wintry weather and crashes snarled a 50 mile stretch of I-70 between Vail Ski Resort and Georgetown.
