Two killed in crash at Buena Vista Regional Airport

SALIDA, Colo. - Two people have died following a single vehicle crash at the Buena Vista Regional Airport.

The accident happened on Friday.

Officers from the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office, the Buena Vista Police Department and the Colorado State Patrol responded to the accident.

Officers say the driver, Lynd Fitzgerald, 71, of Colorado Springs and the passenger, Roger Lichtenberger, 76, of San Marcos, California were test driving a 2016 Dodge Challenger inside the boundaries of the Buena Vista Regional Airport.

The car was traveling Southbound on the runway at a high rate of speed and continued off of the runway for another 314 feet before becoming airborne over a ravine, eventually hitting the ground.

The car became airborne a second time, flipping end over end, over a second ravine before coming to rest on its wheels.

First aid was administered to the two passengers, but both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident with the assistance of the Colorado State Patrol.
