Seattle Mariners veteran outfielder Franklin Gutierrez has informed the team that he will miss the 2014 season because of ongoing health and injury concerns.
The Mariners said Thursday that Gutierrez suffered a relapse of the gastrointestinal problem that slowed him last season.
Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reported that Gutierrez was placed on the restricted list and taken off the 40-man roster.
The Mariners signed Gutierrez, who turns 31 later this month, in the offseason to a one-year, $1-million contract plus incentives.
Gutierrez has not been a full-time starter since 2010, but he had played for Seattle since 2009. He hit .248 with 10 home runs and 24 RBIs in 145 at-bats over 41 games last year.
