The Tampa Bay Rays traded catcher Jose Lobaton and two unnamed minor leaguers to the Washington Nationals for right-handed pitching prospect Nate Karns, according to reports Thursday.

The clubs have not yet announced the deal, which has been discussed over recent days.

Tampa Bay has been considering dealing Lobaton since the Rays acquired catcher Ryan Hanigan from the Reds, according to MLB.com.

Lobaton, 29, who has spent the past three seasons with Tampa Bay, is a career .228 hitter. He hit seven homers with 32 RBIs last year.

Karns, 26, made his major league debut last season in Washington, allowing 10 earned runs and 17 hits over three starts that spanned 12 innings.
