The Badgers had just five yards rushing in the first quarter, but Melvin Gordon finished the game with 193 and a pair of scores. Trailing 14-3 in the second quarter, Kelly led a 10-play, 75-yard drive that was capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by Grice and Zane Gonzalez added a 19-yard field goal to bring the Sun Devils within one before halftime. Arizona State dominated statistically in the first half, outgaining Wisconsin 219-101 in total yards, but the Badgers held their own after Beau Allen recovered a fumbled snap on a punt attempt in the end zone that followed Stave's 2-yard touchdown pass. Trailing 24-19 in the fourth quarter the Sun Devils rallied again as Grice added his third score of the night on a 2-yard run to take the lead.
