The Montreal Canadiens signed first-round draft pick Nikita Scherbak to a three-year entry-level contract, the team announced Monday.

Scherbak, a forward, had 28 goals and 50 assists in 65 regular-season games with the Saskatoon Blades of the WHL last season. He led all WHL rookies in scoring and was the Eastern Conference finalist for the Rookie of the Year award. He led the Blades in goals, assists, points (78) and power-play goals (eight).

Montreal selected the 18-year-old Moscow native with the No. 26 overall pick in the draft.
