2 dead in crash with train near Las Animas

LAS ANIMAS, Colo. - Two people are dead following a crash with an Amtrak train car Friday morning just west of Las Animas.

The Bent County Sheriff's Office confirmed it was called to a fatal crash at Highway 50 near County Road 8 at about 8:30 a.m. Colorado State Patrol is leading the investigation into the crash.

According to CSP, the two people were in a Toyota Corolla traveling south on Bent County Road 8.75 and was near Highway 50 when the car went over the railroad crossing. The car didn't yield, and an Amtrak train that was traveling west struck the vehicle.

The driver was identified as 35-year-old Samuel R. Cornejo of Las Animas and the passenger was identified as 35-year-old Gabriela Martinez, also of Las Animas. They were both pronounced dead at the scene.

CSP said the railroad crossing where the car was hit did not have signals or a crossing gate.

None of the 126 passengers or 12 crew members on the Amtrak train were injured.

The crash is still under investigation.
