Manitou couple out $90K following contractor scam

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - One Manitou couple paid a local contractor $93,000 for a new deck in their backyard. Now, more than a year later the job still isn't completed.

Instead, Charles and Joann Lawson are left with a lein on their house. Our team is working to get their money back.

"It was a dream, and then it was a nightmare," said Lawson. "They need to be stopped."

The Lawson's hired "Decks R Us" back in December 2017 for their home nestled in the middle of Pike National Forest. They had sold two properties to afford a new deck and were looking forward to putting the finishing touches on their dream home.

In the beginning, it went smoothly.

"They had part of the framing done and I'll show you the picture, we were like smiles, we're finally getting it and it just didn't happen," said Lawson.

But, now 19 months later the Lawsons are left with:

  • No deck
  • No railing
  • No pergola
  • No gutters
  • No retaining wall
  • No sign

They had already paid for everything, the Lawsons explained. On December 11, 2017 they paid $51,250. On June 8, 2018 they paid an additional $20,000. And on January 18, 2019 they paid a final amount of $22,250.

That's more than $90,000 over the past 19 months.

And now the Lawsons say their contractor, Kevin McGee, refuses to finish the work.

So our team went to McGee's house to get an explanation.

When asked if the contractor would make finishing the Lawson's deck a priority, McGee told our reporters that Charles Lawson had kicked his crew off of the Lawson's property.

The Lawson's deny that. Yet, the rest of McGee's story didn't quite add up. McGee said that his crew have completed all the work for which they've been paid.

Clearly, McGee was paid. But the Lawsons say McGee didn't pay his supplier. Now his supplier has a lein on the Lawson's house.

"Are you aware they have a lein on their house now?" Stephanie asked.

"Yeah, I understand that. It's $6,000," McGee said.

Now the Lawsons are stuck in a mess.

"They have no conscience... they have no empathy... nothing," Joann Lawson said.

We are still waiting to hear back from McGee for further comment. Our team will continue digging into this developing story.
