Man dies after assault in Manitou Springs, 2 arrested

MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. - Manitou Springs police officers found a man unconscious in a kiddie pool full of water shortly after midnight Thursday, and now two men are facing murder charges after the victim died.

It happened at an apartment at 601 Manitou Ave. around 12:30 a.m. Officers were called there for an assault and found the victim. The victim was taken to the hospital but died at about 3 p.m.

Two people were arrested early Thursday morning on charges of attempted first-degree murder and assault in the first degree, but those charges are going to be upgraded, according to Manitou Springs police.

The suspects were identified as 33-year-old Freddie Joseph Crespo and 25-year-old John Robert Swinehart.

MSPD says there's no threat to the public, but the investigation is still ongoing.

The last homicide in Manitou Springs was in 2013.
