Suspected carjacker shot and wounded at Colorado campground
CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (AP) - - Colorado police say a 29-year-old man who carjacked a vehicle and shot at other vehicles was himself shot when he threatened a camper at a campground in Pike National Forest.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says the man was shot multiple times and taken to a hospital where he was in stable condition.
The man's name hasn't been released.
The first victim reported they were traveling on Rampart Range Road when they were flagged down by a white male between 20-30 years old, standing next to a blue Mazda station wagon with a blown rear tire. The victim sped away when they say the suspect carrying a firearm.
The suspect then re-entered his car and drove north on Rampart Range Road. While driving on Rampart Range Road, the suspect encountered two other victims who he menaced with a weapon. According to the second victim, the suspect shot in their direction. The third victim reported the suspect pulled the trigger on the firearm but it did not discharge.
The suspect continued driving a stolen vehicle and shooting at passing vehicles. He ultimately stopped near Devils Head Campground and approached a camper with a rifle. The suspect pointed the rifle at the camper and police say the camper returned fire.
No one else was injured. Charges are pending.
